Event Report: 28 November: The Impact of the US-China Trade War on EU-China Relations

10 December 2018

On 28 November, the EU-Asia Centre hosted a discussion between high-level representatives of Beijing-based think tanks close to the Chinese executive, and a number of representatives from the European Commission and the European External Action Service. The topic of the meeting, hosted by Senior Advisor to the EU-Asia Centre John Farnell, was the ongoing trade conflict between the US and China and its potential implications for Sino-European relations as well as the EU economy. As President Trump continues to impose tariffs on Chinese imports, pressure on both the Chinese economy and the international trading system continue to rise.

On 7 November, together with the Korea chair at the VUB, the EU-Asia centre held a panel discussion on the EU-Korea relationship. The focus of the event was a new publication by the Korea chair ‘EU-ROK relations: Putting the Strategic Partnership to Work.’

Introducing the panel, Fraser Cameron, Director of the EU-Asia Centre, said that insufficient attention was paid to Korea, and India and Japan, the EU’s other strategic partners in Asia. The establishment of the Korea chair at the VUB was thus very much to be welcomed. Today’s event marked the publication of a new report on how to deepen the partnership. It was also timely given the recent summit during ASEM and the growing uncertainty about developments in East Asia.

7 November: The Future of EU-Korea Relations

The EU-Asia Centre and the KF-VUB Korea Chair invite you to a panel discussion on the Future of EU-Korea relations. The strategic partnership between the EU and Korea is strong and solid, as demonstrated by the 19 October summit between Presidents Tusk and Juncker with President Moon. But there is much more the two partners could do together, as illustrated in a new policy report by the KF-VUB Korea Chair, which identifies several areas in which cooperation could be strengthened to boost bilateral ties whilst promoting global security.

The discussion will be held on Wednesday 7 November 2018 from 15:00 to 16:30 at the Press Club, 95 Rue Froissart, Brussels.
