Prospects for EU-Asia Relations in 2020

Sixty Minutes Briefing with Gunnar Wiegand, Managing Director for Asia-Pacific, EEAS

With Indian Prime Minister Modi in Brussels on 13 March and EU leaders heading to Korea, Japan and China before the summer, there is renewed momentum in EU-Asia relations. Later in the year there will be a special EU-China summit in Leipzig followed by the ASEM summit in Cambodia. Relations with ASEAN are still impacted by the dispute over palm oil but some progress is being made towards establishing a Strategy Partnership between the EU and ASEAN. On the trade front, the EU-Vietnam FTA has just been ratified in the EP while negotiations with Australia and New Zealand are on-going. Others are in the pipeline.

The briefing will be held from 1700-1800 in the Press Club, 95 Rue Froissart, 1000 Brussels on Monday 9 March.

Yet promises to improve gender equality have not always been fulfilled. The Gulf and EU-Asia Connectivity

On 15 October the EU Asia Centre and the Bussola Institute co-hosted a seminar focusing on the role of Gulf States in connectivity strategies linking Europe and Asia in the changing geopolitical situation.
