Oslo Seminar

21 September 2018

Speaking to the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) on 19 September Fraser Cameron spoke about how President Trump was pushing the EU and Asia closer together.

He argued that Asia had been shocked by Trump’s actions – withdrawal from the TPP, Paris climate change agreements, Iran deal, etc and increasingly looked to the EU as an anchor of stability in preserving the rules-based international system.

The trade deals with Japan, Korea, Singapore and Vietnam and the on-going negotiations with Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand were evidence of the EU’s outward approach to trade.

There was also growing cooperation in foreign and security policy as evidenced by Mogherini’s trip to Asia in August.

The ASEM summit in Brussels in October would also boost EU-Asia relations.
