22 October 2018

On 18 October 2018, business representatives from throughout Europe and Asia gathered in Brussels on the sidelines of the 12thAsia-Europe Meeting which took place simultaneously. A number of political leaders from Asia and Europe delivered keynote speeches to the business community. Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, Prime Minister of Vietnam, Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway, Dato’ Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary-General of ASEAN, Violeta Bulc, European Commissioner for Transport and Pavel Telička, Vice-President of the European Parliament delivered their perspectives and visions for a further strengthening of the ties between Asia and Europe.

The conference was organized by BUSINESSEUROPE and supported by the EU-Asia Centre.

The event was organized a few days after the Council of the EU formally adopted conclusions on the new EU Strategy on Connecting Europe and Asia, which lies out a strategy to invest in Euro-Asian connectivity. Connectivity is a key priority in current EU-Asia relations, as witnessed by the rise of numerous institutions and frameworks aiming to strengthen connectivity (such as AIIB, Belt and Road).

The two panels held during the conference, moderated by Fraser Cameron, Director of the EU-Asia Centre, focused on how businesses and ASEM governments can work together to respond to future (connectivity) challenges, and on the role of business in building bridges, respectively.
