Herman van Rompuy at EU-Asia Centre ASEM Event

17 September 2014

Opening a major conference on ASEM on 16 September, the President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy, said that Europe and Asia were becoming more and more interdependent in the fields of politics, security, economics, trade, finance, and the environment. Looking ahead to next month’s summit in Milan, which he will chair, President van Rompuy said that ASEM provided a valuable fora for leaders to meet in both multilateral and bilateral formats. The many side meetings were a major contribution to reducing CO2 emissions!

The summit would be preceded by a business forum, a parliamentary meeting and various youth and people to people events. Mr van Rompuy said that these civil society contacts as well as the mushrooming exchange students and tourists were bringing Europe and Asia ever closer together. Both sides still needed to make a greater effort to understand each other’s culture.
