Appointment of Gunnar Wiegand as EEAS Managing Director for Asia
26 December 2015
Federica Mogherini has appointed Gunnar Wiegand as the new EEAS Managing Director for Asia. He will take up the position on 4 January. Wiegand was Director for Russia and eastern Europe for seven years and before that served as spokesman for Commissioner Chris Patten. He is an old Commission hand having also served as Head of Unit for the United States and Canada desk. Although he has little Asia experience he is regarded as one of the most talented Commission officials and is expected to quickly make his mark on EU-Asia relations.
